The Astrology of Politics: The Susan G. Komen Public Relations Disaster

Pink Ribbon(Astrology Explored) Pro-lifers defend it, Pro-Choicers bash it, but it is clear that the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s decision to end funding to Planned Parenthood has produced a backlash has colored the public’s perceptions of a once lauded charity as a politics driven vehicle bent on shaping public policy.

The funding was granted for use in breast cancer screening procedures, including mammograms and other breath health education programs.

A spokesperson for Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.) said that he personally called Komen founder Nancy Brinker to complain when he heard the news on Tuesday, and he and 22 other members of the House of Representatives have signed onto a letter asking her to reverse her decision.

“This is an alarming development resulting from political pressure from anti-women’s health organizations,” the letter says. “We ask – in the strongest possible terms – that Susan G. Komen reconsider its decision, as the health of millions of brave women everywhere demands the same kind of bravery exhibited the Komen Foundation.”

Celtic Astrology: Imbolc and the Symbolism of the Cross-Quarter Days

Imbolc—The intersection of winter and spring(Astrology Explored)

Halfway between the Winter Equinox and the Spring Equinox is the cross-quarter day which the Celts called Imbolc (eem’ ul). We call it Groundhog’s Day, February 2. Though the names are different they come from the same Celtic tradition.

Imbolc marks the day when daylight makes significant progress against the night.

Wikipedia tells us:

The holiday was, and for many still is, a festival of the hearth and home, and a celebration of the lengthening days and the early signs of spring. Celebrations often involved hearthfires, special foods (butter, milk, and bannocks, for example), divination or watching for omens, candles or a bonfire if the weather permits.[1][2] Imbolc is traditionally a time of weather prognostication, and the old tradition of watching to see if serpents or badgers came from their winter dens is perhaps a precursor to the North American Groundhog Day. A Scottish Gaelic proverb about the day is: Continue reading

Mundane Astrology & Politics: Why is Florida Such a Troublemaker in Elections?

Florida's State Flag

Florida's State Flag

(Astrology Explored)

Remember this?

Bush v. Gore, 531 U.S. 98 (2000), is the landmark United States Supreme Court decision that effectively resolved the 2000 presidential election in favor of George W. Bush. Only eight days earlier, the United States Supreme Court had unanimously decided the closely related case of Bush v. Palm Beach County Canvassing Board, 531 U.S. 70 (2000), and only three days earlier, had preliminarily halted the recount that was occurring in Florida.

In a per curiam decision, the Court ruled that the Florida Supreme Court’s method for recounting ballots was a violation of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Court also ruled that no alternative method could be established within the time limits set by the State of Florida. Three concurring justices also asserted that the Florida Supreme Court had violated Article II, § 1, cl. 2 of the Constitution, by misinterpreting Florida election law that had been enacted by the Florida Legislature.

In 2008 Hilary Clinton lost crucial delegates when Florida decided to hold its primary early in contravention of Democratic party rules. An unhappy Democratic National Committee stripped Florida of all of its votes, rendering Clinton’s overwhelming victory over Barack Obama meaningless.

Now in 2012 Florida does the same for the Republican primaries: Continue reading

The Astrology of Parenting: The Challenge of Generation Y

Tethered Parent Child Conversation

Tethered Child-Parent Converstation

(Astrology Explored)
Today’s parents get a bad rap for being too overprotective. Called Helicopter Parents by authors Neil Howe and William Strauss, they are blamed for ruining their children by sticking their nose into every aspect of their children’s lives, fixing every upset, trivial or no.

This has been the most protected generation in history,” says Mark Thompson, director of counseling at Colgate University. He points to car seats, bicycle helmets, and even wood chips under park swings. Because Gen Y has been reared in a “risk adverse” way, they tend to be psychologically fragile, robbed of their own identities, and unable to feel a real sense of accomplishment for their efforts.

So it is the parent’s fault when junior can’t handle life. But what do you say when something like this happens? Continue reading

The Astrology of the State of the Union Address: President Speaks to US Chart Hotspots

Obama's 2012 State of the Union Address

Obama's 2012 State of the Union Address

His first volley in his re-election bid, President Obama, in his 2012 State of the Union speech, spoke directly to issues that concern the American public at large. The speech at around 9:00 PM EST on January 24, 2012, the information used to cast the chart we will discuss.

We’ll take a look astrologically at Obama’s State of the Union address. The chart below has relevant sections and planets highlighted in different colors so I can point you to the astrological point I’m addressing.

The American Dream and the Issue of Fairness

“ . . . the basic American promise [is] that if you worked hard, you [can] do well enough to raise a family, own a home, send your kids to college, and put a little away for retirement.
The defining issue of our time is how to keep that promise alive. No challenge is more urgent. No debate is more important. We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well while a growing number of Americans barely get by, or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, and everyone does their fair share, and everyone plays by the same set of rules.”

The chart of the United States (inner wheel), its progressions (middle wheel) and transits (outer wheel) reflects this theme of fairness. The progressed Mars and Moon of the United States, (in the purple section of the chart) in the zodiac sign of Libra, sit on the Natal Saturn of the United States. This natal Saturn reflects the promise of the America dream; if you work hard, you can raise your children with freedom from want, own your own home and have freedom from want in your retirement years. This Saturn is in the tenth house, where the sun shines brightest in midday. Our reputation as the “land of opportunity” comes from this Saturn. Continue reading

Mars Retrograde: Just What Are You Doing Down There?

Marilyn Monroe The True Story (Astrology Explored) Newscaster: Mars stations in Virgo on the day of the Aquarian New Moon. Many astrologers have posted their take on this combo, but Astrology Media Press thought to ask the planets themselves, “What does it all mean?”

I am here at the celestial home of Venus, the goddess of beauty and Mars, the god of war. . .

Venus: (dressed as Marilyn Monroe speaking little breathlessly) And sex, don’t forget that he is the god of sex.

Newscaster: Yes, well this is a family show. (changing subject) I love what you are wearing.

Venus: Thank you. I am in the zodiac sign of Pisces right now.

Newscaster: And where is the man of the hour, Mars?

Venus: Um, yes. (Looks around over her shoulder).

Venus: Just where is he now? (Goes to doorway where there are stairs that leads down.)

Venus: (sweetly) Honey, are you down there?

Voice from basement: What?

Venus: (exasperated and in the breathless Marilyn voice) So sorry. He did know you were coming.

Venus: (shouting down the stairs again) Mars! The news people are here!

Mars: (from basement) What? I thought that was Thursday. Look I’m a little busy down here with Uranus.

Venus: (rolls her eyes. There is a knock at the door.)

Venus: Sorry! (rushes off to the door and finds Pluto at the door)

Pluto: Hey, sexy. (Steals a kiss) Where’s your man?

Venus: (flustered) This isn’t a good time. We’ve got a news interview.

Pluto: Really? (Pushes his way past Venus).  I bet he’s in that old man cave of his. Has Uranus gotten here yet? (Pluto heads down the stairs)

Venus: (stamps her feet) Now really! (Catches herself and looks sheepish)

Venus: (to newscaster) So sorry. He IS stationed right now. He tends to become focused on one thing when he stations and he IS in the zodiac sign of Virgo, so he is zeroed in on the minutia of what he is doing. (goes to stairs again.)

Venus: (shouting louder) Honey! The news people are waiting for you!

Mars: (shouting up the stairs) Just a minute! We are going over last year’s facts and figures! We’ve just got to get it right this time!

Venus: (perplexed) Last year? Honey, this is no time to do the taxes!

Various voices from the basement: Yeah! That’s right! We’ll do that again! That will show them! Good job! Be careful with that!

Newscaster: (counting on his fingers and growing alarmed) Mars, Uranus, Pluto. Isn’t it almost a year from when the Fukushima power plants exploded?

Venus: (absently, still staring down the basement steps) I suppose. (raises her voice in annoyance) Mars!

Sounds of footsteps on the stairs. Mars makes his appearance.

Mars: (Shakes newscaster hand) Hello, good to see you. I hope the little woman here (gives her affectionate squeeze a little too hard) has been making you comfortable. Caught me in the middle of a meeting. Lot’s of things coming up! Thinks are going to shake, rattle and roll! My friend Uranus will see to that. Pluto will help too. But we are still working on the details. Get in touch with my boy, Mercury, he handles communications . . .say around January 28, when he meets up with the Aquarius’ new moon point, when he’s at 2 degrees of Aquarius. All the details will come out then. Uranus rules Aquarius, don’t you know. Actually, Saturn used to rule Aquarius, but when Uranus came around, he was MORE than happy to share the work.

(Rumbling sounds come from the basement, Venus looks worried).

Mars: Oops! Got to go! (He bounds down the stairs again)

Venus: Oops? What the . . (She shouts down the stairs like a fishwife) Mars! What are you doing down there. You better not leave a mess for me to clean up!

Mars: (calling up the stairs) Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’ll take care of it.

Venus: (turning to newscaster, exasperated) As if he ever does.

Newscaster: (to audience smiling broadly) So there you have it folks. Expect some exciting things coming your way!

The Astrology of Business: Priceline Negotiator “Fired”

Wiliam Shatner in 2005

William Shatner in 2005

(Astrology Explored) Priceline.com changed its business model so William Shatner must die. OK, not the actual William Shatner, but his Priceline persona, the Priceline Negotiator. In a commercial to be air this coming Monday, the Priceline Negotiator’s last words as he tumbles to a fiery death are, “Save yourselves . . . some money.”

It’s a tough decision, but the bottom line is Priceline had to do it,” said Peter Sealey, adjunct professor at the Claremont Graduate University’s school of management. “They’re changing their business model from a name-your-price model to a fixed-price approach.”
Shatner’s Negotiator was just too good at representing the old approach, Sealey said.

“Had he been less effective, he could have been allowed to fade away,” he said.

The Priceline Negotiator was “fired” in the most literal terms possible going up in flames as the Negotiator and the bus from which he saved a bunch of fellow travelers explodes. And interestingly, the astrology shows the timing, which we’ll get to in a minute. But first let’s go into a little business history.

The iconic Shatner, known as “the man” by a number of his faithful fans, started as nascent Priceline’s front man in 1997, not for money, but in exchange for stock in the company. Wikipedia tell us: Continue reading

Thrifty Brains and Predictive Astrology

(Astrology Explored) What does the art of prediction and solving a daughter’s wardrobe crisis share in common?

My college age daughter came into my room with a belt.

“Can you fix this, mom?”

“What’s wrong?”

“I can’t get the buckle to hook into the belt”

In other words the prong (some people call it the post) was not in the right place. Or was it?

I examined it for a few seconds and considered the options. To get the prong in position to slide into the holes in the belt I’d have to bend it so it would slip into the correct position on the other side of the frame of the buckle. But how did it get in the wrong position in the first place? Both the prong and the frame were sturdy and not amenable to bending. Something was wrong with this picture. I then looked at the belt and realized all I had to do was to turn the belt back through frame of the buckle and all was in the right place.

“Is this how it is supposed to look?”

The daughter looked at me as if I was some sort of magician. Continue reading

The Astrology of Christmas Myths: Holiday Sales Will Save Us

Super Santa ClausEvery year we hear the same thing. Holiday sales are up 3.5 or 3.8 or 4.1 percent. Good for the economy yes? Not so fast.

For someone like me who spent a good deal of her day job career crunching numbers, this 3% to 4 % stuff smells suspiciously like slicing and dicing the numbers to fit media spin. It seems like growth, but it is massaging the numbers against one variable or another to make it look like growth. Maybe they are comparing quarterly sales, or a sales projection, but one thing they are not doing is comparing apples to apples.

A Little History Please

Ritholtz.com’s post on this subject pointed the way to revealing numbers.
2007: (pre-recession) Holiday sales: $516 billion
Holiday sales as percentage of annual retail sales: 19.5% Inflation Rate 2.85%
2008: Holiday sales: $495.5 billion
Holiday sales as percentage of annual retail sales: 18.6% Inflation Rate 3.8%
2009: Holiday sales: $504.8 billion
Holiday sales as percentage of annual retail sales: 19.4% Inflation Rate -.34% Continue reading
