Astrology and Carl Jung: Part 2 Jung’s Childhood

Note: As my Facebook friends know I have reentered college to finish up my degree in psychology. As part of one class I am writing a paper on the influence of astrology on Carl Jung. Jung is widely embraced in the astrological world because his theories on archetypes, which he used to create a therapeutic model, fits neatly with the symbolic language of astrology. What follows here is the rough draft of this paper presented in parts. Your comments are appreciated. Citations and references are in APA style.

Most biographies such as Claire Dunne’s (2012) do not fully recognize the influence of the paranormal on Jung’s childhood. The first surviving child of five children, the son of parson, he grew up in poverty. Jung’s grandfather was a well-known and successful physician, his mother’s family socially prominent. Though Jung recounts early dreams and recollections of his childhood in his autobiography few biographies recount the roadmap that led Jung into a career that explored the inner world of the human psyche.

The fact is that Jung’s childhood was truly terrifying. There was a perpetual, unnamed strain between his parents. At the age of three he became ill prompting a separation of his parents. His mother went away to a hospital for several months, which disturbed Jung greatly. He developed a deep distrust his mother and admits thereafter of having a distrust of all women. While he trusted his father, he viewed his father as powerless.(Jung 1989)

But there was more amiss in the Jung household than parents in discord. As a parson’s son, he was surrounded by the religiously devout on one hand and the paranormal proclivities of his mother’s side of the family on the other.

Jung recounts his impressions of the funerals over which his father presided. He witnessed time and again men in tall black hats and funerary dress lowering boxes into the ground. People he knew were suddenly not around anymore. He was told that the Lord Jesus was taking the deceased “unto himself”. (Jung 1989) Far from being a comforting figure, for Jung the Lord Jesus became associated with the primal image of being buried in the ground, a figure of death.

If that wasn’t enough to scar a child’s psyche, Jung was steeped by culture in general and by his mother’s family in particular in paranormal experiences. Stories of the unexplained, dreams that foretold the death of a person, clocks that stopped suddenly at their owner’s death, the shattering of glass at the moment punctuated his childhood. His maternal grandfather believed himself to be surrounded by ghosts and held regular conversations with his deceased first wife. His second wife, Jung’s maternal grandmother, was considered clairvoyant. His mother kept a regular diary of her “strange occurrences.” (Main 1997)

In this rarified atmosphere, Jung experienced troubling paranormal events himself. At the age of seven or eight, when his parents were sleeping apart, he witnessed a terrifying apparition of a detached head with its body following that emanated from his mother’s bedroom. His dreams were vivid and frightening featuring underground rooms, phallic symbols and his mother’s voice. In his mind his mother while perfectly normal during the day became a scary preternatural figure at night. (Jung 1989)

Further complicating his relationship with his mother, she treated him as a “little adult”, a confidant with who she would share her secrets. On the other hand, during periods of when his parents did not sleep together, he shared a bedroom with his father. (Dunne 2012)

Tying together the threads of the narrative of Jung’s life we find a childhood that was an emotional minefield. Parental conflict, religion and the occult were overwhelming forces that confused and perplexed his developing psyche. As we will see Jung begged for a rational explanation of the disturbances in his life. He would spend his lifetime seeking these answers in the realm of psychiatry.

The Influence of Astrology on Carl Jung, Part 1

Note: As my Facebook friends know I have reentered college to finish up my degree in psychology. As part of one class I am writing a paper on the influence of astrology on Carl Jung. Jung is widely embraced in the astrological world because his theories on archetypes, which he used to create a therapeutic model, fits neatly with the symbolic language of astrology. What follows here is the rough draft of this paper presented in parts. Your comments are appreciated. Citations and references are in APA style, which according to my sociology teacher, I’m not so good at.

Introduction

“Jung asked himself, ‘What is the myth you are living?’ and found he did not know.” (Campbell, 1971 pg xxi).

Jung’s work focused on untangling the strands of myth and symbols as the means to understand the human psyche. His search to understand the unconscious mind took him through the mythologies and mystic practices of the world. He developed over the course of his career theories on the importance and interpretations s of dreams, symbolism, the collective unconscious, archetypes and personality types. Nearer to the end of his career he developed the theory of synchronicity, the theory that two events could be related in meaning though there might not be a causal relationship between the two. This last theory was directed mostly at astrology, which he found useful, especially in diagnosing difficult cases. The scientific community considered astrology as superstitious, unsupported by any natural mechanism. Synchronicity threw out the need for a direct causal relationship while upholding the symbolism of his archetypal universe.

The antipathy for the metaphysical roots of Jung’s work runs deep in academe as evidenced in this paragraph:

“Even so, it is not necessary to have a grounding in analytical psychology for us form a judgement as to the probity of Jung’s proposals. Jung’s concepts of the archetypes and the collective unconscious serve as the basis of a theory about the relation of the unconscious to the conscious mind and for the development of the latter out of the former. This is an empirical, not a metaphysical theory “ (Lawson, 2008)

Astrology suffered a decline in reputation and practice in the 15th and 16th centuries not because as Scofield (2010) argues it was disproved by emerging science. It was not. Sweeping social, religious and political change brought people into power whose reputations were built on science and the scientific method. They had a vested interest in retaining their positions. Astrology, carrying a five thousand year history and the stain of ancient misperception of natural forces, was easy dog to kick to prove the “superiority” of the scientific method. From that time forward anyone that claimed the title of scientist or researcher who dared “to be associated publicly with astrology, which implied political recklessness, enthusiasm and the vulgar classes, was to ask to be tainted.”(Scofield, 2010)

Anxious to quell any potential professional backlash Jung assured the influential Freud: “”Please don’t worry about my wanderings in these infinitudes. I shall return laden with rich booty for our knowledge of the human psyche….”

But the Swiss psychologist, as we will see, did more than wander in search of tidbits to add to the understanding of the human psyche. In astrology, Jung found a framework on which to peg all his future theories. To understand why he found astrology so useful we first need to examine his childhood.

Astrological Society of Connecticut: Lecture and Workshop by Julene Packer

Julene Packer

Julene Packer

SEPTEMBER
Lecture: Thursday, September 20, 2012 7:00 PM
Julene Packer

The Vertex and the Law of Attraction: This lecture illustrates how the Vertex represents what we unconsciously attract into our lives. The Vertex is an electric angle that has to do with electrostatic release points of the earth and is the most unconscious point of the chart. Always found in the western hemisphere of the chart, the Vertex is often referred to as the third angle and a point where we encounter fate or things beyond our control.

Workshop: Saturday, September 22, 2012
10:00 AM-5:00 PM
Julene Packer

Astrological timing of Events: Clients often come to us wanting to know when something is going to happen. These questions can be answered by Horary; but the alternative is to look at transits, progressions, and/or directions. This technique is based on the speed of transits. She will do this once using a famous person and a past event and then will do timings of events in the lives of participants.

Julene Packer Louis, Dipl.OCA, is a professional astrologer who combines the disciplines of Yoga and Astrology as a journey to awakening. She is the CEO of the International Academy of Astrology, where she has been teaching for twelve years. Julene is certified by ISAR as a CAP (certified astrological professional).

The Astrology of Hurricane Issac

Predicted Path of Issac as of 8/31/2012

Predicted Path of Issac as of 8/31/2012

(Astrology Explored) Seven years after Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Isaac revisited the miseries of extreme weather on Mississippi. While the new levees of New Orléans held, residents in Plaquemines Parish weren’t so lucky as a gulf side levee broke filling the area between levees with fourteen feet of water.

It pummeled the Mississippi Coast with relentless roundhouse jabs, while pinning southern Louisiana under a saturating rainfall. On its crawl up from the coast, Isaac dumped more than a foot of rain in some places and shoved before it a violent storm surge that would soon bring back the terrible old images of 2005 . . .

Now downgraded to a tropical depression the path of Issac has turned north and east. It The storm is projected to eventually peter out over the heavily populated Ohio Valley and the western areas of Virginia and North Carolina.

Astrologically, hurricanes are ruled by Uranus, rain by the Moon and Neptune. All three planets are represented prominently in the charts of Hurricane Issac.

The first chart we look at (below) is the date of landfall in the United States using the capital of the United States, Washington D.C. as a reference to represent the entire nation. Here Pisces is the zodiac sign on the on the ascendant, with its ruler, Neptune within 7 degrees of it. Chiron. the planet of wounds, sits on top of the ascendant. This is a rain destined to do damage.

In opposition to the Neptune/Chiron combination is the Sun in Virgo loosely conjunct to Mercury in Leo.

Astro*Carto*Graphy maps reveals some fascinating synchronicities. Using the capital of the United States for our first chart of the U.S. landfall day, we see that the Uranus line crosses the Lesser Antilles.

The path of storm continued from there crossing the lines of the Sun, Chiron, Neptune and finally Mercury, where Issac made landfall.

Switching to the natal chart for landfall, using the actual location of landfall, Aquarius, ruled by the planet of hurricanes, Uranus is on the ascendant. The moon is also in the sign of Aquarius. This when Isaac turned from a tropical depression to a hurricane.

Now Issac turns its path to cross those Sun, Chiron and Neptune lines again.

MItt Romney’s Potential Vs. Actualization in His Birth Chart

Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney

(Astrology Explored) Would you say that a political candidate who favors tax cut after tax cut for the richest 5% of the population but but whose tax plans can only raise taxes for the rest has his pulse on “We the people”– or the economic class to which he belongs?

In the 2008 Elections I looked at the birth charts of the contenders, both Democrat and Republican, against the lens of prominent astrological factors in past President’s charts as charted by Romanian Astrologer Dan Ciubotaru. I wrote about Mitt Romney in 2008:

“Romney shares nine of the eighteen most frequent natal astrological configurations shared by United States presidents, out pacing his nearest rival, McCain by three, and Huckabee by two. “

Mitt Romney has the potential to be a great president of the United States. It’s there in his natal chart. But for whom would Mitt Romney be a great president? And why?

Romney college and formative business years shows the result of an economically and politically privileged upbringing.

Wikipedia tells us:

Romney had missed much of the tumultuous American anti-Vietnam War movement while away [in France as a Mormon ]. Unlike most middle and lower class young men his age he avoided the military draft with impunity. Romney had initially received two 2-S student deferments, then, like most Mormon missionaries, a 4-D ministerial deferment while in France, and then two more student deferments.[29][51] When those ran out, his high number in the December 1969 draft lottery (300) ensured that he would not be selected.[29][51][52]

At culturally conservative BYU, he remained isolated from much of the upheaval of the era.[24][46][32] He became president of, and an innovative fundraiser for, the all-male Cougar Club booster organization and showed a new-found discipline in his studies.[32][46] In his senior year, he took a leave to work as driver and advance man for his mother Lenore Romney’s eventually unsuccessful 1970 campaign for U.S. Senator from Michigan;[24][45] together, they visited all 83 Michigan counties.[53][54] He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with highest honors in 1971,[46] and gave commencement addresses to both the College of Humanities and to the whole of BYU.[nb 7]

Romney still wanted to pursue a business path, but his father advised him that a law degree would be valuable to his career.[57][58] Thus he became one of only fifteen students to enroll at the recently created joint Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration four-year program coordinated between Harvard Law School and Harvard Business School.[59]

He was non-ideological and did not involve himself in the political or social issues of the day.[45][58] He graduated in 1975 cum laude from the law school, in the top third of that class, and named a Baker Scholar for graduating in the top five percent of his business school class.[55][59]

Romney was recruited by several firms and chose to remain in Massachusetts to work for Boston Consulting Group (BCG), reasoning that working as a management consultant to a variety of companies would better prepare him for a future position as a chief executive.[57][61][nb 8] He was part of a 1970s wave of top graduates who chose to go into consulting rather than join a major company directly.[63]

While Romney was living and working the life of the economically privileged, America began devolving from an industrial economy into a service economy. Wave upon wave of layoffs hit American society leaving the economy in tatters. We were a shell-shocked people in the aftermath of an economic war. The upshot was the social contract shattered and people no longer trusted companies to act in the best interest of society. The worst part of it was that we accepted that it was OK for big business to pursue a strategy of profits over people. And somehow during this time it became perfectly OK for the rich to stay rich, while the bulk of population bobbed up and down in the seas of economic upturns and down turns sliding in and out of poverty at as the economy improved then recessed.

This is ethical atmosphere that molded people like Mitt Romney who cut their business eye-teeth during this formative time.

Consider that he is against affirmative action. He wants to extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich, and slash corporate taxes and eliminate estate taxes. He also wants to give tax credits to businesses that offer employees health insurance as a solution to “Obamacare” even though there are no provisions to limit what businesses charge for employees for premiums. Because he believes that current unemployment system discourages people from finding work, he wants to transform the current unemployment system from employer-based contributions to personal savings accounts.

He fully believes that these measures will give “the jobs creators” the incentive to reinvest in America even though the massive bailouts of the previous Republican administration did nothing to inspire such actions. In other words, he wants to help the rich to stay rich because this is best for America.

As for non-rich, he wants to see mothers on welfare get jobs or lose their benefits, but doesn’t want to allow them birth control to limit the size of their families. He wants to overturn a woman’s right to privacy as articulated in Roe V. Wade, while giving the states rights in determining when life begins, guaranteeing a 50 state free for all in women’s rights.

He opposes amnesty for undocumented workers even though this is a situation ignored for decades by our government allowing these “illegals” to build families, homes and contribute to society by paying various taxes (such as sales tax).

Clearly Romney has no idea what it is to live life as most American’s do.
What would have been different if he had made different choices, chosen a life of public service over that of a businessman? Could Romney had been a president that could balance the diverse needs a multifaceted and multicultural nation?

Romney has three personal planets in Pisces, and his planet of personal values, Venus in Aquarius. He has a yod pointing those personal planets, the Sun, Mercury and Mars, with Saturn and Pluto at one leg of the yod while other leg sports the planet of idealism Neptune.

His Moon and Jupiter is in intense Scorpio, a magnetic combination that should give him the inner resources to stand by his convictions and command positions of authority.

He should be idealistic and compassionate. He should be a voice for the people at large instead of the 1%.

We still argue the nature versus nurture concept of the formation of personality, but the truth does seem to lie in between. We are born with an innate series of personality traits that we either magnify or modify as we mature. This is the true nature of our “free will” to either answer the inner promptings of our souls or answer the call of world at large. Romney was born with the right stuff presidential, but he chose a career in pure capitalism that has tainted the well.

The Astrology of the Passing of Ray Bradbury: Saving the Future

Bradbury Cartoon

Courtesy of FB Page "Beware of Images"

(Astrology Explored) As the transiting moon joined with transiting Pluto, challenging his Arabic Part of Death at 15 degrees Libra, and as Venus made a rare transit across the face of the Sun, Ray Bradbury slipped away from the bounds of this Earth.

Bradbury “died peacefully, last night, in Los Angeles, after a lengthy illness,” HarperCollins said in a written statement.

“In a career spanning more than 70 years, Ray Bradbury has inspired generations of readers to dream, think and create,” the statement said. “A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and close to 50 books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time.”

The Los Angeles Times credited Bradbury with the ability “to write lyrically and evocatively of lands an imagination away, worlds he anchored in the here and now with a sense of visual clarity and small-town familiarity”

He described his method of composition as “word association,” often triggered by a favorite line of poetry.

Ray Bradbury was born August 22 1920 4:50 PM CST Waukegan, Illinois. We are fortunate to have a precise birth time, which gives a complete chart to analyze. Media reports that he died in the evening hours of June 5, 2012 but we do not have a precise time.

It is easy to see where Bradbury came by his love of words. His sun in Leo is reinforced by by three other planets in that zodiac sign highlighting a need to center stage. Sitting alongside his sun is creative and expansive Jupiter, the planet of dreams, Neptune, and the planet of thinking processes, Mercury. Communication was his passion, and trine his moon in philosophical zodiac sign of Sagittarius writing was his way of communicating his philosophy of life to the world.

“I don’t try to describe the future,” Bradbury has often said. “I try to prevent it.”

As of this date no cause of death has been released. Looking at his chart we see natal Venus sitting with natal Saturn in the eighth house of death in stress aspect (inconjunct) the planet of illness, Chiron. Transiting Mars at the time of his death was running over Venus and Saturn. Venus relates to the kidneys with Saturn adding weakness to the kidneys. Venus and the zodiac sign of Virgo also can indicate a problem with diabetes which certainly is “a lengthy illness.” It seems to this astrologer that Mr. Bradbury may have passed from kidney failure as a complication of diabetes, though with transiting Uranus connecting Chiron, his passing was quick and maybe even unexpected at the time. With Venus and Saturn sitting in the eighth house, this information is kept secret from the public, so the family will not make an announcement of his cause of physical death.

Mr. Bradbury leaves with us an extensive legacy in his writings giving voice as his biographer, Sam Weller says, to the human soul, pointing out that it is up to us to save the future.

May Astrological Society of CT Lecture and Workshop: Melanie Reinhart & Chiron

Melanie Reinhart

Melanie Reinhart

It’s a large ball of dirty ice and only a temporary visitor to our solar system. Discovered by astronomy in 1977, in a lightning fast 10 years the first major astrology book was published on Chiron, and a new player in the astrological lexicon was born.

On Thursday, May 17, 2012 award winning astrologer Melanie Reinhart will lecture, titled A Centaur among Centaurs – Introducing Chiron for the Astrological Society of Connecticut at Keeney Cultural Center, 200 Main St., Wethersfield, CT at 7:00 PM.

Melanie will review the meaning of Chiron, with its astronomy and mythology. We will take a personal and inward view, considering how the energy and meaning of Chiron is reflected in our own lives and in our horoscope.

On Saturday May 19, 2012 Melanie will continue with her Chiron material in a workshop titled Healing Journey – Transits of Chiron from 10 AM to 5 PM, Fisk Hall, Wesleyan University, Middletown CT.

In this workshop, Melanie will focus on the transits of Chiron, as well as the ‘Centaurs’ Pholus and Nessus, demonstrating the sometimes astonishing literalness of their astrological symbolism. In addition, the ancestral dimension of Chiron’s meaning along with suggestions about how to work with this important material.

Melanie Reinhart was born in Zimbabwe, whose night skies inspired her astrological vocation. She holds a B.A. in English, Music and Drama and has been a professional astrologer since 1975. She is a recipient of the prestigious Charles Harvey Award for ‘exceptional service to astrology’.
