Astrology and Psychic Ability

In the long shuttered television series, Babylon 5, psychics were a hot topic. You had two choices if you were found to be a “telepath”, work for the government sponsored, quasi-military group, the Psi-Corps or take “the drugs”, which had dangerous side effects, to suppress your abilities. In a neat little trick the Babylon 5 writers, from time to time, would use a “commercial, to illustrate the wider cultural context of the show in a form that was readily identifiable to us. In a particularly memorable Psi-Corp recruiting commercial a miserable young boy was picked on for “knowing things” other people didn’t. Magically a Psi-corp recruiter shows up and explains to Johnny that he is special and if he would only join the Psi-corp he wouldn’t have a single financial worry in his life.

Thankfully, we do not have the government scooping up our psychic children for “training”, but on the other hand we barely acknowledge that such abilities exist. Worse yet, if we acknowledge them, we misunderstand these energies even fear them. More than once, this astrologer has been at the receiving end of what I call “the look”. “The look” at once conveys fear that I know too much about them and the disbelief that anyone could.

You don’t have to be psychic to be an astrologer, and as an astrologer, you don’t want to admit it when you are. We don’t want to be identified with the cheesy reputation of “psychic astrologers” of 900 line fame. Nor do we, at a time when so many of us are working to bring astrology into the mainstream, cast a Neptunian fantasy aura around the pragmatic practice of our art.

For those astrologers with psychic ability, often the line is blurred between astrological insight and psychic impression. But how do you know, other than a feeling, if you have actual psychic ability? Let’s take a look at Terri McCartney’s study of the charts of a select group of psychics.

Thirty-three percent of psychics have the ruler of their ninth house in Leo or Pisces.

She says of this placement:

I view the 9th house as the house where we have experiences that push at the comfort zones of our conditioned beliefs and assist us in grasping the “bigger picture”— ultimately discovering that we are spirit having a human journey.
38% of psychics with a mutable sign rising, 31.25% (25 of the 80) have Virgo, Sagittarius or Pisces rising. Pisces/Virgo is the work and service axis.
Sixty-one percent of psychics have a masculine sign on the Midheaven (Air or Fire).
Forty Seven percent have an outer planet in the eighth house.

As far as more traditional markers of psychic ability:

Twenty percent of our psychics have the Sun in Pisces, demonstrating the greatest percentage of positive frequency difference of any of our factors—146%. The ruler of the 7th house, the ambassador of our relationships with others is also found in Pisces in 13.75% of our psychics charts. This suggests the possibility that when the ruler of the 7th house is found in the sign of pure consciousness (Pisces) one of the significant relationships in our lives is with spirit and otherworldly realms of experience.

As for astrologers, in a separate study, Terri found:

38% had the Sun in Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn and these placements were found in the astrologers charts twice as often as they were found in the control group.
Sun, Moon or Mercury was found in a fixed house for 70% of astrologers and Venus, Mars, Jupiter or Saturn were placed in an air house for 71%.
Sixty-three percent of the astrologers had the ruler of the eleventh house direct.
None of the astrologers tested had a mutual reception between Sun and Uranus.
Pluto, Chiron or the North Node was placed in one of the Gauquelin power zones in 66%.
Uranus was found aspecting the vertex in the control group more often than it was found aspecting the vertex in the astrologers’ horoscopes.
Nothing was found in 100% of the astrologers’ charts.

Well this astrologer has a mutual reception between her Sun in Aquarius and Leo in Uranus, consider traditionally as a marker of an astrologer. But that particular aspect may be looking for a needle in haystack, since at the most 350,000 people in the United States were born with this aspect last go round of Uranus in Leo. While this sounds like a big number is actually represents just little over 1% of the population of this country.

Still the question remains for some us. If you are an astrologer do you think your insights come from pure astrology, psychic impressions or both? What do you do identify as the inspiration for you insights?

The Astrology of Evolution: Saturn, Uranus, Pluto At It Again

castration-of-uranus2
The Sun in Virgo marches on the join Saturn in his long-term position, shining its light on Old Man Time who is and has been in opposition to Uranus. At the apex of T-Square is the original change agent, Pluto, commanding a position as middleman. This is a story as old as time, the struggle of new power systems against the old.

Once the supreme ruler of the Gods, Uranus, was the son of the primordial goddess, Night. Called the god of the Sky, Uranus presided over a human race that was morally pure, that did the right thing naturally. Uranus made the Earth, Gaia, his wife and mated with her each night. However, he hated the children of Gaia, most of who were monstrously formed. He imprisoned them and Gaia hated him for it. She devised a plan to free her children by persuading, one child, Saturn to dethrone his father. The Earth Mother gave him a flint sickle with which Saturn attacked his father, castrating him and destroying his procreative power.

Flint sickles were used before the development of metal implements. During the late Stone Age Neolithic humans domesticated wild cereals and grains, became farmers and left their hunter-gatherer ways behind. It is theorized that during the hunter-gatherer phase and through the entire Neolithic phase humans operated cooperatively but did not have the capacity for self-awareness, what is call the bi-cameral mind. Instead, mental processes of early humans operated in a state where independent thought was perceived as the voice of god. Thus humans perceived an ongoing and intimate relationship with god where god directly controlled their actions.

The difference between this ancient father/son pair is that while Uranus assumed his role as the primordial “father sky” instinctually, commanding the collective naturally, Saturn used conscious intent to command control. As hunter-gatherers, humans reacted to the environment, “naturally,” while as farmers assumed more control and organization over their environment. As the survival strategies of humans changed, their gods changed too signaling an evolving, though not a fully evolved, consciousness.

As “the son” Saturn faces “the father” Uranus in the sky, the push pull of imposed order over primordial collective instinct plays out once again. Interestingly enough, Saturn is one point of a Yod, called the finger of God, pointing directly at Saturn’s usurper, Jupiter, who was called Zeus by the Greeks. Uranus is in Aquarius, indicating a destined change in the collective consciousness. Pluto in Capricorn is the signal a change from the old economic and political systems to the new. Having evolved past the bicameral mind to conscious thought, from collective group action to the rise of the individual, what evolution awaits us now?

America’s Eighth Saturn Return

As every astrologer knows, planet Saturn with its cycle of nearly 29-1/2 years is as relevant for a nation as it for a human being. When America was born on July 4, 1776, Saturn was in Libra in a tight square to our Cancer Sun. At our eighth Saturn Return in 2010, it will be in a T-square with Uranus and Pluto. Keywords for the eighth sign (Scorpio) and eighth house are death and rebirth and transformation. As we approach our eighth Saturn Return, these questions come to mind: Will this Saturn Return have Plutonic/Scorpionic overtones? Will it be the re-invention of America? Which karmic chickens are due to come home to roost this time around? What is the significance of Saturn in hard aspect to Uranus and Pluto in 2010? How will this transit from late 2009 to 2012 impact us individually and collectively?

Shelley Ackerman is a professional astrologer and columnist from New York City. She has appeared on Access Hollywood, MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, BBC, NBC, ABC, CBS and over a thousand radio shows on numerous stations. The Astrology of Saturn: If You Care, Don’t Touch Me There

saturn1Your Saturn points are deepest fears and your best keep secrets, stuff that runs deep to the core of our emotions. We don’t want to discuss these things; the anxieties that make us melt into a puddle of tears. Anyone who cares for us learns it is best not to hit that hot button, not to touch us “there.” Saturn in a sign, Saturn in a house, or Capricorn on the cusp of a house, all of these are Saturn points.

How do know your Saturn points? For this you’ll need a copy of your chart or you’ll have to consult your local astrologer. (Go to www.astrodienst.com to get a free copy of your chart.)

Saturn in Aries, Saturn in the first house or Capricorn Rising : You crave being “the Big Boss” and you secretly feel you aren’t cut out for the job. You feel guilty about your ego and are anxious about your body image. Remarks about your leadership skills or your appearance drive you through the roof.

Saturn in Taurus, Saturn in the second house, or Capricorn on the cusp of the second house: You are afraid of not having enough money, even when you have it. Worrying about your bank balance leaves you open to neglect more important things. Learn to recognize them. Hint: it isn’t money.

Saturn in Gemini, Saturn in the third house, or Capricorn on the cusp of the third house: Despite your intellectual brilliance, you are afraid you aren’t as smart as you think you are. You fear deep discussions because you think your perceived lack of knowledge will trip you up.

Saturn in Cancer. Saturn in the fourth house, Capricorn on the cusp of the fourth house: You fear losing your home and you fear you don’t deserve one in the first place. Daddy may have undermined your feeling of security or your self worth. You do best when you strive to create your own feelings of security.

Saturn in Leo, Saturn in the fifth house, Capricorn on the cusp of the fifth house: Secretly you crave the adoration of others and you fear you don’t deserve it. Driven to be creative, you fear nothing you do is good enough. The stuff you create is awesome, but how would you know?

Saturn in Virgo, Saturn in the sixth house, Capricorn on the cusp of the sixth house: You are afraid you aren’t working hard enough or are organized enough. If you miss a detail you go nuts. You are especially touchy about your health, with at least one issue that freaks you out regularly. There is nothing wrong with preventative medicine. The number of vitamins you take is another matter.

Saturn in Libra, Saturn in the seventh house, Capricorn on the cusp of the seventh house: You secretly evaluate your associates as “better than” or “worse than” yourself. A relationship of equals terrifies you. Ironically, you fear “unfairness” as well. As a child you drove your parents nuts with your “little lawyer” routine. If your parents didn’t teach you well, you still do it as an adult. Marry. It’s good for you.

Saturn in Scorpio, Saturn in the eighth house, Capricorn on the cusp of the eighth house: You are terrified of your passions, and are terrified to live without them. Trusting others is a huge issue for you. As a child you learned that other people do not have the same level as commitment you have, because for you it is all or nothing. Ironically, you fear that other people will control you.

Saturn in Sagittarius, Saturn in the ninth house, Capricorn on the cusp of the ninth house: No other position craves freedom and is so bone chillingly terrified of it. You avoid marriage like it is poison ivy. If someone does net you, you’ll do stupid things to wreck the marriage, then wonder why your partner didn’t love you enough to put up with it. Be as smart as you really are and appreciate what you have.

Saturn in Capricorn, Saturn in the tenth house, Capricorn on the cusp of the tenth house: Its odd that you are so afraid of authority when you crave so much to have it. You’ll substitute career ambition for love relationships, then wonder why you are so alone. Your own success makes you nervous, and suspicious that the guy running behind you is trying to take what is yours. Learn to make allies instead of enemies. You’ll be more successful, faster, with them.

Saturn in Aquarius, Saturn in the eleventh house, Capricorn on the cusp of the eleventh house. You desperately fear you are not normal and are terrified of your own uniqueness. You yearn for group companionship and avoid it at the same time. W. C. Fields explained your ilk best when he said; “I don’t want to belong to any club that would have me for a member.” Join something.

Saturn in Pisces, Saturn in the twelfth house, Capricorn on the cusp of the twelfth house: You were told as a child “Don’t be afraid.” so naturally you are. The irrational sends you up the wall. You are not likely to pay attention to any of that New Age fluffola, like astrology. You fear other people’s illnesses, yet ironically many of you end up as health care professionals. Since you are not likely to seek out therapy, seek God for solace.

The Astrology of Physical Appearance

When I was talking with one of my fellow astrologers from the Astrological Society of Connecticut, she said to me, you have a Taurus ascendant, don’t you? I asked her how she knew that. In her day job, she runs a hair styling salon, so over the years she’s had the opportunity to observe people and their facial shapes and so has grown quite astute in determining someone’s ascendant. Quite a gift!

At Learning Curve on the Ecliptic, Twilight wrote an interesting post about the subject. And if you want to see what other people with your Sun and Moon look like you can check out Astrofaces (www.astrofaces.com) here. With the Sun Gemini/Moon Libra type there seems to a be a predominance of oval faces, usually a tad longer than other people with high cheek bones and a strong chin. A very elegant look indeed!

When you look on the internet there are quite a number of sources of information about this fascinating subject. I’m still learning about it myself!

Reader’s Question: Troubles With Pluto

astrologers-mailbox-copyHi Beth,

I’ve been your fan for sometime now, excellent work (and funny too!)
My stats are as follows: DOB: 12-24-1955 in Guantanamo, Cuba born at 2:20 AM. I’ve had Pluto affecting me now for years…first in Scorpio (my ascendant) now in Capricorn, my natal 2nd house, so my question to you is, what should I expect this time around? Sometimes it feels perfect, other times, I feel the world is crumbling around me…the changes are, to put it mildly, formidable…Thanks for you time, and I truly enjoy your work…Susan

I would imagine that you’ve been a fairly anxious person, regardless of Pluto transits, throughout your life. So anxious, that you’ve hardly know what it is like to really relax and let go of your troubles even for a little while. People tell you all the time to relax, but you don’t know what they mean. Doesn’t everyone feel like you?

Well no. You have a rather extreme set of aspects in your chart that hightlights the edginess you feel all the time:

1.) An excitable Moon in Aries in grand trine with your Sun to your Pluto/Jupiter combination with Pluto in “do as I please Leo” and Jupiter in “do I please you” Virgo.

3.) and rather strange grand cross in fixed and cardinal signs (rather like being in car that bucks when you apply the clutch, you want to go, and maintain your position at the same time)

The whole dichotomy of your life is this “pushmepullyou” dynamic that has you wanting very much to “fit in” to society while having a strong desire to do as you please. And though I usually apply the “honorary Scorpio” badge to some one with Plutonic intensity driven by strong connections from Pluto to a personal planet, here you are more like an honorary Aquarian. You have a strong need to pursue spiritual growth through achieving unique personal goals. However, because of the inconjunct to Uranus you hardly have a clue to do this, and the result is weird type of rebellion, where you stubbornly refuse to do anything except get into trouble. As a result, your self image suffers, because you have a sense that you should be achieving something important, if you could only figure out what it is. Does this sound familiar?

As much as if doesn’t seem like it, Pluto here is your friend. Not everyone get a Pluto transit to their Sun as it takes Pluto 245 years to circle the Sun. This is once in a lifetime chance to make major improvements. In a real sense, this next two years is the time you’ve been waiting for your entire life to finally resolve those issues that have been haunting you this entire time. Because it is Pluto, you have one of two ways to go with this. One is kicking and screaming, which is noisy and ultimately fruitless. The other is total submission to the process, much like a patient enters surgery. This does not mean releasing your conscious intent, but rather living fully in it. If you navigate this process successfully, you will own entirely the result of your actions. You will no longer be the victim of “fate” or the messed up people that complicate your life. You will learn that you can not control events. The only thing you can control is your emotional reactions to them.

The whole point of this is discovering your unique gift and sharing it for the good of the community. That is the point of the Uranian process.

And then, lucky you, you get to have your second Saturn Return.

Astronomy and Astrology: When Size Doesn’t Matter

the-debate

The astronomical world was upended by the discovery of a new orbiting body, 2003 UB313, which was eventually named Eris. Larger than Pluto, and another recently discovered body Sedna, it’s discovery begged the question of what makes a planet a planet.

When Sedna made her transplutonian presence known this same notion was visited, but no headway was made, since Sedna is smaller than Pluto, and was safely classified as as a planetoid, that is until Eris came along.

Pluto is a small planet, so small, that some astronomers are called for the recall of Pluto’s planetary status. The astronomical community was not so sanguine with this idea. In the scramble to define what made a planet a planet Pluto was reclassified in the new class called dwarf planets. Thrown into this mix is Ceres, (thrown in and out of the Planet Club since her discovery in the 1800’s), Eris, Sedna, Haumea, Varuna, Makemake and Quoaor. And the list grows.

Astronomy and Astrology divorced several centuries ago. That’s all well and good, but who has custody of the kids? Like divorced parents, both sides of the isle respond with differing perspectives. While Astronomers struggle with classifications and definitions, Astrologers work with thousands of years of observations to define how planets and planetoids work in our lives. Pluto will always to be a planet to Astrologers because it demonstrably stimulates a transformative process, as anyone with a Pluto transit to a personal planet will attest to. The newly discovered dwarf planets have a ways to go before we peg them down, but preliminary work show that these bodies pack a powerful punch too. In astrology, despite what the International Astronomical Union says, size does not matter.

Weekly Forecast: The Father of Lies

devil-at-workAstrology for the Week of September 4, 2009 to September 10, 2009

We are all liars. The average person, says psychologist Robert Feldman, the author of a new book on lying, tells at least three lies in the first 10 minutes of a conversation. These of course are the social lies, things like “It’s so good to see you!”, (translation: How long do I have to speak to you before you’ll go away?), “You haven’t changed a bit”, (Translation: Do you think you could crack open a jar of cold cream and do something about those eye wrinkles?) and the ubiquitous “Let’s get together for lunch sometime,” (Translation: I’ll conveniently lose your phone number, and if you call, I’ll be too busy anyway.) These sorts of things are social grease, the little niceties that keep handgun use at bay for the general population. The tiny planet Mercury rules these social lies, and generally they help rather than harm in a species where social connectedness is a key to our survival.

But deeper and more insidious are the lies told to society and ourselves to maintain the social mask that we fit in. So much of our childhood is spent in socialization, the process that takes our inner toddler and shapes it into a “productive adult”. And yet, that process is never complete is it? There is always a place where we think we should have more, do more, get more, just because we want it. Somewhere along the way, when we’ve come to settle for what we have instead of what we want, we tell ourselves that that is all we deserve, or that’s all we can manage, or that what we want isn’t all that important. A little distortion takes place. Somehow we made it OK, if only for the moment to deny our essential nature. This is where Pluto comes in. Pluto is the planet that represents our deepest desires; the essential needs that we end up denying ourselves. It is the place if where we do not face the truth fiercely that becomes the “Father” of our inner lies.

This week, as Pluto challenges Mercury, and opposes Mars, we come to face our inconvenient truths and our inner lies. Don’t expect the picture to be pretty.

Aries—You many think you are laying it on good, but you’ve told the same story so many time before that no one is listening. Really.

Taurus-People come at you with their version of the truth and it’s not pretty. But that’s just their version, isn’t it?

Gemini—This weekend has you spending time with your friends and spending your cash in a freewheeling end of summer adventure. Truth time: Can you really afford this?

Cancer—You may find out some uncomfortable truths and you want to come out swinging, or pouting. Whatever your weapon of choice, consider that mere words are not going to right wrongs this time.

Leo—Money comes and money goes in frighteningly fast succession. You don’t have to be so extravagant, but of course, you do it anyway.

Virgo—You are expected to clean up unexpected messes. As much as you feel that these are not your responsibility, you just can help yourself but to do it anyway, can you?

Libra—Social lies cover up more than the brief discomfort of meeting people. They cover up your own peccadilloes. How much of a lid you can keep on these with depend on whether or not you can keep your calm in the face of incoming fire. Duck!

Scorpio—A sudden call for help could leave you a few bucks shorter. In the end it’s not the cash that is at issue, but how much you feel obligated to help. And boy! Don’t’ you hate to feel obligated!

Sagittarius—Clowns to left of you, jokers on the right, here you are stuck in the middle with you. Have you considered the company you’ve been keeping lately?

Capricorn—Things are deadly serious as you feel the need to circle the wagons to protect your position. I’d tell you to relax, but you wouldn’t listen anyway.

Aquarius—Demanding people lay claim to your cash. Should you pony up? You may have too.

Pisces—People tell you that you need to get serious. They can’t be serious, can they?

September Monthly Forecast: Pay No Attention to Man Behind the Curtain

sunplanetsm1Two sets of aspect structures are significant this month. One is our old friend the Saturn/Uranus opposition, where old structures are challenged to the foundations. For this past year, we’ve all felt the effects of shifting economic conditions that have overturned our way of life. Now a third player, powerful Pluto in Capricorn, forces his way into the mix, challenging both Saturn and Uranus. “We’re going to play things my way, boys!” says Pluto, as he takes control of the field. This is heady stuff, too much for most of us, so the other aspect structure, Venus in Leo opposite Jupiter and Neptune in Aquarius grabs our attention. Here the drama queens and divas take control, diverting the public from the back room deals Pluto hammers out. Money makes the world go around, as the song goes, and the drama queens and divas want their share. Pay up and watch the show, America! Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. He doesn’t want you to see what he is really up to.
_____________________________________________________________________
buttonariesThe only really interesting thing this month is your love life, which is pretty much what you care about anyway. Someone bright and shiny catches your eye, and he or she thinks you’re pretty interesting too. The rest of your life however is muck, where you have to tackle boring things like duties and responsibilities and letters from lawyers, not exactly the sort of thing that you want to show off to a new playmate. Pity.
_____________________________________________________________________
taurus-buttomThere is an opportunity to work with some creative types, which could lead to some some growth potential in your field of endeavor. However, their preoccupation with themselves and their desire to do as little work as possible does leave you feeling slightly used and abused. Though it may not be immediately apparent, your efforts will be recognized, so put forward your best smile and act like everything is going according to plan. Eventually it will.
_____________________________________________________________________
gemini-buttonGetting your act together is difficult when you are busy chasing rainbows. Gem, we love you, but this month calls for paying attention to details, not exactly your strong suit. Tackle your to do list first and your sweetie later, and things will work out much better all the way around.
______________________________________________________________________
cancer-button1Spurred into action by Mars in your sign, an over riding sense of destiny overtakes you. Now is the time to explore your untapped potential. However, as much as you believe in yourself, don’t go overboard in financing your dream. Expend your effort rather than your rather thin resources.
______________________________________________________________________
buttonleoOne question you have is “who are these women and why do they think they own my money? The other question is “Is anyone going to pay any attention to me?” Well, dear Leo, the scoop is that your considerable gang of friends have to work to pay the rent, and they don’t have much time right now to pay court to you. Be cheery and helpful rather than resentful. They will appreciate you all the more.
______________________________________________________________________
buttonvirgo1You get yourself into a more than a few difficulties by failing to recognize small annoyances as the big problems that they are. Fortunately for you, some powerful women in your life can help you get out of a jam, if you let them! You don’t have to fix everything yourself, and it’s not a reflection on you if you need to get by with a little help from your friends.
______________________________________________________________________
buttonlibraLibra you are the luckiest of all of us this month as you have the power to make your dreams come true through your many social connections. If there was ever a time for you to lay the groundwork for some grand scheme this would be it. Just wait until September 29 when Mercury goes direct and the sun is in your sign to put your ideas in play.
_______________________________________________________________________
buttonscorpioYou can handle this month’s challenges well by keeping your focus on the things that will be your long term security. Home, family, and nurturing relationships are especially important this month as you come to realize how much you depend on this things. Allow them to be your inner compass.
_______________________________________________________________________
buttonsagittariusOther people’s ideas of how things should be drive your actions this month. You do like to keep people happy, though inside you know you must please yourself as well. How to reconcile the two will be your challenge this month.
______________________________________________________________________
buttoncapricornA knee jerk reaction that you intend to protect your position may backfire. This is why you don’t act quickly to begin with. Go back to the drawing board and rethink your plan of action. Listen to the advice of your friends before you make a big change.
______________________________________________________________________
buttonaquariusSometimes it is a curse to be so talented. No one seems to be able to do without you. And yet at the same time It seems that no matter how hard you work either you or other people are not satisfied with the results. Alternating from extreme stress to extreme boredom doesn’t help either. If you think that your talents would be better appreciated elsewhere, then there is an opportunity for drastic change, though it may be a situation of “out of the frying pan into the fire.” It’s up to you to choose.
______________________________________________________________________
buttonpiscesThe forces of evil, (i.e. order, hygiene and organization) pits itself against your innate goodness (i.e. why care about such mundane things, I’m meditating) forcing you stare down your enemy. Yes, Pisces, when are you going to realize that sometimes you are going to have embrace the darkness to find the light? Will you please clean up after yourself!!!

The Astrology of the Life Cycle: For Everything There Is A Season

Astrology ClockRaise your hands, who remembers Gail Sheehy’s book Passages. Ok, now that you’ve just dated yourself, do you remember what the book was about? In Ms. Sheehy’s bestseller, which was all the rage when I was in college, she talked about the developmental stages of adults, which was broken up roughly into the decades of our lives, the twenties, the thirties, the forties, etc. This was ground breaking stuff, since up until then the cultural thinking was that was when you became an adult, you were pretty well done developmentally, or as Judge Judy would say “cooked.” And in seeing that the people around me were hitting these developmental milestones, what she was talking about seemed to make sense.

Then a decade later, I started a serious study of astrology and learned, ta da, that astrologers knew all about these milestones and have been talking about them for quite some time. In fact, there is a timetable of events that is more predictable than Jay Leno’s jokes, that defines significant developmental markers.

At age seven , our progressed moons make a square with our natal moons. Here is the first separation from the parent, the first inkling of independence. In the Catholic Church, age seven is when you can make your First Communion, since at that age, you can distinguish between right and wrong and can confess your little seven year old heart’s sins.

At age fourteen, is the first major energetic connection is the waxing Uranium sextile. When Uranus in motion in the heavens is 60 degrees away from the position of Uranus at the time of birth, Uranium electricity surges through the new ly forged energetic connection and activates the drive to act as an individual. Uranus demands separation from the parent.

Age twenty one, the traditional legal age of adulthood, is the first Uranium trine. Just try to stop these folks from going out on their own! Their sense of adulthood and adult entitlement blossoms and in individuals who have matured properly, there is a readiness to leave childhood behind, to take on the challenges of adulthood. The individual has the first run at establishing a career and social identity, though without the life and death seriousness of later years. Sometimes, during this time, the nascent adult retreats back to the comfort of the home to regroup, only to go back out in the world with better defined goals.

At age twenty nine, Saturn comes back to its original position in the natal chart. Known as the Saturn Return, it is a significant passage to serious adulthood. As a gateway to the thirties, where we traditionally establish our permanent homes and our own families, it is often fraught with fears and worries. An emotionally trying time, the individual struggles to clarify his or her adult identity. There is a real sense that it is time to grow up for real, and the need to establish his or her own family becomes a real priority. First homes or the birth of a child often accompanies the first Saturn Return. This is the start of definition of ourselves in what we do for other people.

Most women dread turning forty, because for us in this culture, it marks the beginning of the end of the childbearing cycle. Sand has started to shift, as they say, and our lives during the thirties had taken a serious turn which is continued in the forties. However, in the forties, there is a series of major transits that has come to be known as the mid-life crisis. Here the progressed moon opposes the natal position, taking the opposite viewpoint of your emotional center, so to speak. Certainly you feel at odds with yourself as you realize that your youth is slipping away and your role in society is shifting slightly. On top of that Uranus, opposes its natal position, and for many of us, we feel that everything we have done is little appreciated. On top of that Neptune squares its own natal position, making it difficult to see issues clearly. Feeling constrained with the roles we’ve carved out of society, we want to kick up our heels and do what feels good for us. This is OK if you’ve decided to take up fitness dancing, but it doesn’t work if you decide to have an affair. Marriages can break up during this difficult series of transits, especially if both partners are about the same age. The goal for this set of transits is to define yourself not in terms of what you do for other people, but in how you contribute to society with the gifts you offer society as an individual.

The next set of transits hit around age fifty five and fifty eight or nine. Uranus and Neptune trine their natal positions, opening us up to a new spiritual connection. Having explored our inner truth, we want to reconnect to more Universal truths. Many times, an interest in established religion is reinvigorated, or there is an interest in reinginited in education. These transits dovetail into the Second Saturn return, where we process what we’ve accomplished in the preceding adult years, and assess how well we have attained our goals.

Well past your fifties, you still grow as an individual. the gateway to the last third of your life, the Second Saturn returns makes you aware of your accomplishments. You evaluate what you have done during your life and the results of your life work. Now are you ready to to pass on what your have learned, share the combined knowledge of your life so far. You may do this as acting as a mentor to younger coworkers, in community work or with your grandchildren. Successfully navigating the Saturn Return prepares you for the remaining phases of life here on earth before we all take the journey home.

Around age 62 and 63 we face the one two punch or the first Plutonian square and another transiting Uranus square natal Uranus. Here we feel we are being pushed out in favor of the younger generation who are ready to take up the reins of power. As with any Uranian transit you are being asked to redefine your role in society. Resisting this transit and denying your changing role will only bring more stress. Recognizing this transit as the proper time to free yourself of societal expectations is liberating. Of course, we need to acknowledge and accept that we are no longer young, quite a challenge for baby boomers, with perpetually youthful Leo in Uranus as the signature of their generation. If we accomplish most of what we’ve set out to do, we look forward to our remaining years as a time of spiritual exploration.

Age 70 brings us to the 3rd Progressed moon opposing the Natal Moon. Here is the true retirement age, when we put aside our workday endeavors.

In our early eighties, between the ages of 82 to 84, we experience Uranus returning to its natal place and transiting Neptune opposing the natal position in the birth chart. With the Uranus return and the Neptune opposition there is either a sense of accomplishment of becoming the type of person you were meant to be or frustration that goals were not achieved. This can be a physically trying time depending on other aspects in the chart. Often times this is age when the soul chooses to return home.”

These heavy hitters brings into focus our spiritual connection, our contributions to the world and the need to prepare for the next journey.
